Saving Word Templates

Shouldn't a Word template file (dotx) that you open, automatically open as a
..docx file so that users cannot save over the template? Mine opens as
..dotx... it is saved in the Trusted Templates location.

I am not a Word 2007 user, but in prior versions, the short answer is NO,
that's not correct. A template, when double-clicked, takes the default
action of File-->New, while a document takes the default action of
File-->Open. For more on templates:

Did you do an Open command from inside of Word? If so, then Yes, the
template will open. However, if you went through the New templates folder
and selected it, a .docx document should have been created. If you opened
the folder that the template was stored in and double clicked on it, a new
..docx document should have been created. However, if you right clicked on
it and selected Open, it will Open.

There has to be a way to open the .dotx itself, and if you open it from
Word's Open dialog, this is default behavior. If you right-click (in the
Open dialog) and choose New, then you'll get a Document# based on the
selected template. Or, if you double-click on a dotx file in Windows
Explorer, you'll also get a Document# based on the template. From the Open
dialog, however, Open is the default behavior, and this has been the case
witn Word for Windows as far back as I can remember.
