Sending e-mail without opening Outlook or new message window

What is the process called when a program accesses Outlook and sends an
e-mail without opening Outlook or its New Message window? I am trying
to search to see why one of our programs accesses the mail system,
sends a message, but the message never gets to the Outbox. And there
are no errors.

A virus?

Seriously, you need to provide some details for anyone to even hazard a
guess. Like the version of Outlook, using Exchange or POP3, what program is
sending, and how you KNOW it is sending.

After furious head scratching, Buut asked:

Depending on the method the program uses, I can imagine a message might not
appear in Outbox. Does the message appear in Sent Items?

Sorry, here's the detail. Outlook 2003 running on Exchange 2003. The
program that sends out the e-mail is a proprietary application that
does construction estimating. It sends a letter (as a Word attachment).
When it attempts to send the message you get the security popup asking
if you want to allow it to access Outlook. I click YES for 5 minutes
and it looks like the process completes. However, no message in the
Outbook or Sent folder. When it worked it will show up in the Sent Item
folder.
