Sequencing task numbers after sort

For purposes of identifing the task when discussing the project after it is
created I would like to have the numbers on the far left in sequence after
sorting...when I sort by start date the number sequence is out of order, is
there a way to sequence the task numbers once the sort has taken place?

Bill,
Yes, check the option to "permanently renumber tasks" at the bottom of
the Sort window. If you do not want tasks permanently renumbered, you
will need to designate a spare field for your task numbering sequence.

When you sort by ID & renumber the sequence, How do you get it to save the
new order after sorting. I hit save button & it saves till I close file &
re-open. then the ID numbers are out of sequence again. This has only been
happening since we went to MSP 2007.
