stop birthdays from auto setting reminders

OL07, when i set a birthday for a contact, it automatically turns on
reminders, sometimes for 0 minutes, sometimes for 15 minutes. i have
options>preferences>default reminder unchecked. yet they still are turned.
in fact, for some it seems that have turned on for birthdays that were set
some time ago.

how can i stop reminders for birthdays?

are you syncing with a smartphone? That's usually where the 15 min reminder
comes from.
