Sync Problem: OneNote 2007 SP1, iPAQ PDA with WMDC 6.1, Vista

M

Michael

I am unable to sync from my laptop (Vista) to OneNote on my PDA running WMDC
6.1.

I am able to sync my Outlook Contacts, Outlook Notes, Calendar. OneNote
Mobile is installed on my PDA. I am able to sync a note that I write from
OneNote on my PDA to my laptop (it arrives in the OneNote Mobile section),
but I cannot sync anything the other way, from my laptop to my PDA.

On WMDC Home page, in Mobile Device Settings, Change Content Sync Settings,
Microsoft OneNote shows up properly, but when I click the Sync Setting link
below it I get the message, “There are no settings for this item typeâ€. I
find that strange since it is there and I wonder if this is indicatove of my
problem, but I do not know how to solve it.

Any ideas for a solution.

Thanks.

Just confirming: you can create a new note in the OneNote Mobile section on
your laptop, but it will not synch to your PDA. However, it does synch the
other way.

Do you get an error message when attempting to synch from laptop to PDA?

M

Michael

Hi David:

Sorry David, you may have misread my post.
I can create a message in ON on my PDA (i.e. test test test) and it will
appear on my laptop in the ON Mobile section. However nothing will sync the
other direction.

Hope this clears up any misinterpretation.

D

David

I did get that message, maybe it is my Aussie accent that has confused
things :)

I just want to confirm that you understand that OneNote will ONLY synch from
one section (usually named per your PDA) in one notebook (the ON Mobile
notebook). It will not synch with any other notebooks or sections.

So, when you do create a new page in OneNote on your laptop in that section
it does not synch. My question is - do you get an error message on
attempting the sync in WMDC?

D

David

Point of clarification: when outlining the behaviour for ON synching, I am
specifically speaking in the context of synching with a PDA. Other
behaviours apply for ON sharing.

M

Michael

Hi David:
Your last point first. Yes, we are specifically speaking about a PDA.

Now to your previous message. I am not quite sure I understand what you mean
when you say, "I just want to confirm that you understand that OneNote will
ONLY synch from one section (usually named per your PDA) in one notebook (the
ON
Mobile notebook). It will not synch with any other notebooks or sections."

Also I do not get any error messages when attempting to sync with WMDC.

Maybe I am just not doing something right. I just created a new page to the
test note that did sync to my laptop from the pda and tried to sync by no
luck.

Also if I go to File - Sync everything is greyed out except for "Work
Offline" if this means anything.

Now to your previous message. I am not quite sure I understand what you

when you say, "I just want to confirm that you understand that OneNote
will
ONLY synch from one section (usually named per your PDA) in one notebook

sections."

Let's say you have three notebooks: Work, OneNote Mobile and Unfiled Notes.
OneNote will not synch from the Work or Unfiled Notes notebooks - only from
the OneNote Mobile notebook.

Now, within the OneNote Mobile notebook, you will have a section, generally
titled with the name of the PDA. Let's say you create two other sections,
'Section A' and 'Section B'. OneNote will not synch pages from these other
sections - only from the PDA titled notebook.
Also I do not get any error messages when attempting to sync with WMDC.

Maybe I am just not doing something right. I just created a new page to
the
test note that did sync to my laptop from the pda and tried to sync by no
luck.

I am wondering if it might be worth moving any important pages in your
OneNote Mobile notebook to safety and then deleting the entire notebook,
allowing the next PDA synch event to rebuild it.

To do this:
[1] Disconnect your PDA
[1] Move any important pages in OneNote Mobile notebook to Unfiled Notes or
another notebook
[2] Right click OneNote Mobile notebook on the navigator and click Close
this Notebook
[3] Delete the notebook - remove the OneNote Mobile folder in My
Documents\OneNote Notebooks
[4] Reconnect your PDA
[5] Attempt a WMDC synch
Also if I go to File - Sync everything is greyed out except for "Work
Offline" if this means anything.

This is for synching with shared files or Sharepoint, not synching with a
PDA.

Michael

Sorry to say no success.

I deleted the ON notebook as you suggested, etc.

I notice one other thing. I have shortcut on my desktop for the PDA which I
created before I installed ON. I used it to sync items to my PDA from my
laptop that were not automatically synced, eg. photos, docs, etc. from
various files and folders. I transferred an ON file to this folder and it did
sync with the PDA but when I tried to open it I am unable to do so; I get a
message, "There is no application associated with "Renovations". Run the
application first, then open this file from within the application." I don't
understand this.

Any further thoughts?

Pls be a bit more cooperative.

No success says everything and nothing :-( :-(
Pls tell us what you did exactly and what were the results.

This is just WAD (working as designed).
The ON mobile application on the PDA can not work with files copied over
from the PC.
It can only work wit the data which are sent to it by synching.

You would not send your Outlook *.PST files to the PDA expecting you
could open the calendar there, would you?

Sorry I am doing the best I can.

I have gone through the procedure again and this is what I have done:
[1] disconnected the PDA (there was only one unimportant test file in the ON
Mobile Notebook at this point),
[2] closed the Notebook,
[3] deleted the ON Notebook in My Docs\OneNote Notebooks\etc,
[4]reconnected the PDA, and
[5] Synced with WMDC. The same result as before. On the laptop in ON there
is now a OneNote Mobile Notebeook with a Section Notes from MLG's PDA with
the "test test file" from the PDA in it. If i write a note in this section it
will sync back to the PDA. If however I create a new section in the Notebook
on the laptop it does not sync back to the PDA.

So I think we are back where we were before.

What else would you suggest?

If it's just as before, it has been correct before ;-)
What else would you suggest?

Just work the way it's designed for.
Put all of the stuff to be synched into the section and off you go.

Thank you for getting me straightened out. Perhaps I am a victim of habit and
how I have used my PDA in the past.

However, now that I am at this point please help me with one more problem,
the solution to which may seem obvious and simple to you, but I seem to be
unable to figure it out.

What I am trying to do is transfer the details from a section (in another
Notebook on my laptop) that is nine pages long to my PDA. It contains notes
for a renovation project and I would not need my laptop if I can put the data
on my PDA. I can find no simple way to do this.

I look forward to your response.

Thanks

Click Move Page To.
Select the One Note Mobile section that synchs.

Thanks. I was just about to post a note that I had fount the solution.
My problem was that I was looking for the copy, paste, move or whatever on
the taskbar at the top. Everything is easy once you know how!

Thanks again to you and Rainald for all your help.

That's why we are here for ;-)

For putting pages into the section which is used for synching there is a
really fine PowerToy:

Have fun
