TOC with Headings- Change Fonts displayed in document?

HI,

I select a heading style in my document for a heading and then I insert a
TOC page.

My problem is that I would like the TOC to be in a standard font OTHER than
the actual document headings style font.

Eg. The heading on a page may be in Comic Sans 14 point italic BUT I only
want Times Roman 12 point to be the font used when displaying the TOC
headings page.

Can this be done ??

By default, all TOC styles are 12-point TNR. If you are seeing something
different it is because (a) the TOC style has been modified, (b) you have
chosen some TOC format other than "From template," or (c) you have applied
direct font formatting to your headings instead of modifying the heading
styles. Of these, (c) is the most likely. The TOC picks up directly applied
font formatting, which in most cases is what you want (for example, if
you've italicized a single word), so any changes that you want to apply to
all headings and NOT be reflected in the TOC should be made in the heading
style itself.

HI Suzanne, Thanks.
So if I have selected a style of font I wante for the heading which appears
to be option C) in your reply, I cannot then have the TOC use a alternative /
default TNR 12 point without also changing the heading style in the main body
of the documenr.

You can modify any style you like, as long as you actually change the style,
via the Modify Style dialog box, instead of applying direct formatting to
the text of your document.

To clear direct font formatting from text, select it and press
Ctrl+SpaceBar.

As Stefan says, the solution is to remove the direct formatting from the
headings and instead modify the style. You can do this as described in
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/styles/ModifyAStyle.html. Alternatively, if
you have a recent version of Word, a much easier way is to apply the
formatting you want, then select the style in the Styles & Formatting task
pane, right-click, and choose Update to Match Selection. This will modify
the style to include the font (and any other) formatting you have applied.
