Transparency problem

I have a .jpg which consists of a circular object inside a rectangular white
background. Using Photoshop Elements, I made the background transparent and
it showed the background properly as a gray/white checkerboard. I then saved
the new version of the .jpg with the transparent background under a new name.
When I brought that .jpg into a Publisher file, I right clicked it and told
publisher to wrap text around the object rather than the frame. However, this
is not happening. Text is only wrapping around the outer rectangle, just as
if I had not bothered to make ithe frame transparent. I have done this before
(with other .jpgs) successfully. I can't imagine what I might be doing wrong
this time. Any ideas?

No, you didn't. JPEG files don't support transparency, so you actually
created transparency, and then destroyed it again - net effect, reducing the
file quality somewhat (as JPEG is lossy).

Use PNG or EPS for semitransparency, neither is guaranteed to print properly
from Publisher. GIF files have working transparency in Publisher, but are
restricted to 256 colours. You can also try the transparency wand on the
picture toolbar (also reduces image quality, and works best on non-JPEG
images, due to artifacts)

Select the image, edit wrap points (the dog icon), anywhere on the image edge
you place your cursor you can create an edit point. Or simply crop. As Ed says
..jpg's do not support transparency.

I got it to work using .eps and "edit irregular wrap. I certainly did not do
this in the past. Now I can't imagine how I accomplished this before.
