Transparent images from publisher into pdf

When I 'set transparent colour' and make part of an image see through it
looks fine in Publisher, but when I then convert the document to a pdf it
doesn't carry across and the image becomes opaque again. Any ideas? I'm using
Publisher

The postscript engine that produces the PDF does not support the
transparency feature within Publisher. To do what you want, you need to
open the graphic in an image editing program - paint shop pro or
photoshop. You then need to create a clipping path (outline) around the
portion of the image that will remain visible. Anything on the outside
of the line will become invisible.

After you have done this, you must save the image as either EPS or TIF
because these are the formats that Publisher supports that can contain
clipping paths. Photoshop has an option called a clipping path but
paint shop pro doesn't. You just need to use the selection tool (or
draw the line on a vector layer - more precise - and convert it to a
selection) and then save the selection to an Alpha channel. Save the
image as a TIF and import into Publisher.

You will also need to check in the advanced options under the printer
properties for the PDF creator that you use that the poscript language
level is version 3. Any lower and your transparency still won't work.

EPS will normally work as a matter of course, as the EPS data is passed
straight to the Distiller.

I wasn't aware that TIF had a special status as being supported in print as
well as on-screen.
I did know that TIF files and Publisher can sometimes disagree, due to the
multiple standards (some of which Publisher doesn't support).

I also know that Publisher supports PNG files with alpha layers (not sure
about clipping paths, but it seems to be the same difference) on screen, but
not always in print.
