Unable to open excel file encrypted/read only

I have a strange situation on my XP machine where I can't open 2 Excel
files which I had only recently been using.

USING Win XP pro and Excel 2002.

Now when I try to open them - they say that there is anerror as the file is
read only or encrypted.

Yet the attributes in explorer ARE NOT read only and I hav enever encrypted
them.

I have always logged on as the same user (there is only one user).

What has happened? other documents are opening fine.

Further to this problem - I can't even access these 2 files to copy, rename
or even email these files.

I can't even scan them with a virus checker. All other files are fine and I
have checked for viruses.

It kind of sounds like the file is in use and windows won't release it.
