Unable to open .vsd using Visio 2007 Viewer

Abel MacAdam

Hi,

I installed Visio 2007 Professional, but de-installed it as I did not want
to activate it (after the trial period).

Someone pointed me to Visio Viewer which should enable me to view the
vsd-files. I installed Visio 2002/XP. But it turned out that the vsd-file was
incompatible with my 2002/XP installation. So I de-installed Viewer 2002/XP.

Next I installed Visio Viewer 2007. The icon of the vsd-file did not change
(from the unrecognised form to the Visio form). Double clicking the vsd-file
did not start up my viewer. But looking at my software list learns me
'Microsoft Office Visio Viewer 2007' is installed.

What do I need to do to get the viewer working?

I'm not aware of compatibility issues due to version differences. Each
version has some new unique abilities, but the file versions tend to be the
same. Since the Viewer cannot open the file, I suspect it may be corrupt.
If you want to make the file available, someone might be able to try opening
it.

The viewer is actually an IE add-in, so you might try using IE to open the
file, to see if the viewer opens. Just drag the file from Explorer to the
Internet Explorer window to test that way.

The other method would be to right click on the drawing, and manually
select IE as the application to open the VSD file with.

I had the same problem and didn't find a solution with Google.

I ended up deleting the file association (From Windows Explorer \ Tools \
Folder Options \ File Types), then uninstalled the Visio 2007 viewer then
reinstalled the viewer. My .vsd icons didn't change, but double-clicking
them now opens them up in IE.

This was logged but could not be addressed before the next service pack.
It will be looked at for the next release cycle, though.

At this point uninstalling and re-installing the Viewer is the only fix.
It is something about the way that Visio uninstalls which kills the Viewer
associations completely. Sorry for the inconvenience.
