Use Visio for floor plan

J

Jeanne

I asked my IT area for a software program that would allow me to lay out a
floor plan and put measurements in to calculate the square footage. They
gave me Visio. Any suggestions on how I should start or if Visio has this
capability? I am lost.

Hopefully they gave you Visio Professional, though you will be able to do
simple layouts with Visio Standard.

Look for "Building Plan" templates in Visio Pro or "Office Layout" templates
in Visio Std. Pick one that looks like it will work for your space.

How big is the space you are laying out? If it's just a single room and not
an entire building, you may want to use a drawing scale of 1/4"=1ft or
1/2"=1ft.

Assuming you've got all your room measurements, it's a matter of dragging
and dropping walls, doors and windows or the "room" shape to match your
space. I like to make generous use of the dimensioning shapes to get exact
sizes. If you will be exploring different possible layouts, I suggest
putting the walls, windows and doors on a background page if they won't be
changing.
