what is Access run time?

I usually just install Access on to my computers but someone asked me
recently whether they would need run-time or developer version. I've never
come across these optiosn while installing the software. They just want to
develop a stand alone database for their own use. Which should they install,
run-time or developer?

He should install the retail version of Access, or Microsoft Office
Professional if he wants the Microsoft Office Suite of applications. The
unlimited license to distribute the Access Runtime version is included in
the Developer version of Microsoft Office (or Access Developer Extensions
for Access 2003 and 2007), but the Runtime version lacks any design
capabilities. It's for end-users only. Since he's not distributing his
applications to users who don't already have Access installed, he doesn't
need the Office Developer version (or the Access Developer Extensions for
more recent versions of Access).

1. The Access run-time is a cut-down version which allows you to run Access
applications but not to design them, so it's obviously not much use for
someone who wants to develop a database!

2. It's a free-to-distribute version intended for developers who want to
distribute their applications without requiring users to buy Access

3. The run-time is not an installation option with standard Access. For
Access 2003 you need the Access Developer Extensions, obtainable by
purchasing Visual Studio Tools 2005 for Office. I understand that the
equivalent product for Access 2007 is not yet available.
