Why are attachments coming through as .dat?

My client sends me Word documents but they have been coming through lately
with a .dat extension that doesn't seem to allow me to open them. It's
encoded or something and looks like a bunch of symbols instead of text.

Can someone tell me how to fix this?

Thank you!

Is it winmail.dat by any chance?
Is one of the mail servers Exchange server and the other isn't?

No, it's not winmail.dat. It keeps the first part of the filename correct -
just changes from .doc to .dat

Is there something I can do on my end to fix the document so that I can read
it?

Thank you!

Not that I know of.
Follow the suggestion offered by Diane and resend the message. That might
solve conversion problem.
