why can't I use the color fill feature in word 2003

What are you trying to fill? Because they have the same paint bucket and
artist's brush icons, users often confuse the Fill Color and Line Color
buttons on the Drawing toolbar (used for text boxes and other AutoShapes)
with the Shading Color and Border Color buttons on the Tables and Borders
toolbar (used for text, frames, and tables).

The fill box that I wanted to use shows no color boxes in it. I am fimilar
with using Word quite well and after posting my question I came to the
conclusion that I need to find out if it is because I upgraded the installed
software that came with my new computer. I bought the validation key for the
Student/Teacher version so I was wondering if this feature is locked out of
the Student/Teacher Version. If so I would like to know, or is it something
else that I am missing?

The Student and Teacher edition is the same version of Word as any other,
just a different SKU (product pricing). Again, I ask, what are you trying to
fill? Do you have the object selected?
