why do sent items stay in the outbox?

I am using Outlook 2007. Today my sent items have decided to stay in the
outbox and not move to the "Sent Items" after they are sent. I have
confirmed that they are actually being sent.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This is often caused by having an antivirus scanner integrated with OUtlook
and having htat scanner operate on outgoing messages, something that will
never catch a virus anyway (since your AV program would already have
complained were your PC infected enough to send an infected message).
Uninstall your AV program and reinstall it without the mail scanning feature
and see if that helps.
