Word 2000 Table of Contents

I inserted a table of contents and it is shaded. It does not print shaded but
it appears that way. It is annoying. I tried everything to have it appear as
normal text but nothing happens. My table of contents is set up so that when
you click a page number it automatically goes to that page. Would this be why
it is shaded?

The clickable hyperlink is not shading it.

Word shades Fields to tell you that they are fields rather than regular
text, and a TOC is a field, where Word generates the text instead of you
typing it.

You can control whether Fields are shaded in Tools | Options | View, but the
shading does nothing but inform you it's a field, so it really doesn't
matter whether it shows up or not.

Also, if you are sending the doc to someone else, I'm pretty sure that what
you set doesn't matter--all that matters is what they set on their computer.

It's nothing to worry about.

You could convert the TOC to regular text, and then it wouldn't be a field.
But it would also not update when the doc changed.
