Word 2007: Slow typing when picture in header (DOCX but NOT in DOC

Astrid

I have a dotm template with a picture in the header. The picture is a 30kb
PNG file- so it's not a big file.
When I create a new document based on this template, Word's response on
typing is very slow. It takes a while to see which characters are typed.

No here's the fun part: If I save the file as .doc, the problem goes away.
If I save the file as docx the problem persists.

If I put the picture in the document layer, no problem at all, the slow
response is only there when the picture is in the header (type of header not
important)
I can reproduce it if I put a picture inside a document that's not based on
the template. So it's not the template either.

The problem is reproducable on multiple systems (which are fully updated
with all current fixes and updates). I tried to save the picture in other
formats like for example jpg instead, but the response is still slow.
It works the same with other pictures too. It's not caused by the
qualifications of the system btw. This is a brandnew fast desktop.

I tried disabling AV and disabled addins and com-addins.
Anyway, what's bothering me most is why the problem is gone when I save in
DOC format and not when I save as DOCX.

Anybody an idea on how to fix this?

I have the same problem and I agree that it goes away if I save the document
as a Word 2003 .doc file. The problem also goes away if I switch from Print
Layout view to Draft view. I haven't figured out another fix yet, but i'd
like to know how to fix this since I prefer Print Layout view.

I had the same problem, and googling around a little bit, showed that many of
us have.
Apparently, this happens when you have a picture in the header/footer of
your template.
Now, I think I found a solution (word 2007). Select the picture in your
header, go to Picture Tools Format in the menu bar, and at your left in the
Adjust box, you see compress picture. This you can do for this picture only,
or in general.
The picture still looks fine, with different settings for screen, print and
email.

Worked fine for me. Hoped I helped you out with this.

I also had the same problem with slow typing in word, and after
googling a little bit, seemed that quite a few people do.
Solution that worked for me (word 2007) with a picture in the header
of the template:

- Select the picture in the header (footer)
- Go to Picture Tools - Format in the menu
- In the most left box you have Adjust in the menue
- Select Compress picture
Now you have the possibility to do this only for this picture, or set
it general. In the options, you can even select the purpose of your
document (print, screen, mail).

Worked fine, and now the typing 'speed' is up to normal
