Word gobbles up corrections

When I make a mistake and go back to correct it the stuff I have
already written is gobbled up instead of allowing the correction to be
inserted. This has only just started happening so I must have clicked
or something like that at the wrong time. How can I fix this please?

Press the Insert key (again, because that's what you did the first time) to
switch from Overtype mode to Insert mode.
