2 different calendars

I have two different calendars in MSP2007.

The 1st one aligns with Project/Options/Calendar of a 7.5 hrs day and 37.5
hr wk.
The 2nd calendars is a 8hr day and 40 hr wk.

I have set some of the tasks and resources with the 2nd calendar - however
when I assign 8hrs work it converts duration 1.07d even though these
resources/task should work an 8 hr day.

It it possible to have the above display 8hrs work and 1 d duration for one
type of resource/task and have another display 7.5 hrs work and 1 d duration
for a different type of resource/task?

Hi Shannon

Unfortunately Project calculates using the settings for the definition of
one day, one wek and one month from the Options tab. Hence if the project
options are that one day is 7.5hrs, then one day for a task/resource using an
8 hr day will show a duration of 1.07days, since 8 hours work represent 1.07
days on the project's 7.5 hour day.

Since you have set the resources according to their calendar then a resource
working 8 hrs per day does in fact work 1.07 of the project day which is only
7.5hrs long. The end result is the tasks will finish in the correct
timeframe, ie by the end of that day, it is simply confusing when first
looked at, why a task is 1.07 days long and still finishes on the same day as
a task 1 day long.

As I have pointed out above, it is all to do with the options setting which
then determines the definition of one day etc.

hope this helps

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the quick response. I figured that it was a MSP limitation - but
thanks for the confirmation.

Remember "Day" as well as Week, Month, and even Hour are just units of
convenience tossed in to make scheduling a little easier. Project itself
converts everything into and out of units of minutes to the nearest 10th for
all of its calculations. When you enter a duration as "X Days" Project
needs to know how many minutes that represents and you can only define 1
"standard day" for each project. The Working Time Calendar then defines
WHICH minutes out of the 24 hour day actually count when measuring duration.
To see this in action, create a task with 1 day duration using all the
default settings. Create 2 resources, Joe who works an 8 hour day and Mary
who has a resource calendar showing she works 4 hours a day, mornings only.
Go to the view options and select a date format that allows you to see times
as well as dates. With a project start date of Monday the 7th, enter the 1
day task. It will start Mon 8am and end Mon 5pm. Assign Joe to it - no
change. Take Joe off and assign Mary. Now it starts Mon 8am and finishes
Tues 12 noon. BUT its duration is still 1 day only. Why? 1 day means 8
working hours. For Joe 8 hours can be put in on one calendar day. But for
Mary, she only gets a half-day's worth of working time in before she goes
home on Monday, leaving her another half-day on Tuesday before "1 day" of
working time get's completely burned up.
