2003 address book problem

I've just installed Outlook 2003 on a new machine and I can't get my contacts
to show up in my outlook address book. The help topics suggest that this
should be automatic, but it didn't happen. Other help topics suggest I go to
TOOLS>ADDRESS_BOOK and click on DIRECTORY but there is no DIRECTORY in the
window that opens.

It has never been automatic. That's why they provide instructions:

.
Russ, followed your link. Followed the steps but hit a problem.... Step 2: MARK YOUR CONTACT FOLDER FOR USE WITH YOUR ADDRESS BOOK...
I got to step 2 - opened the window, went to the OUTLOOK ADDRESS BOOK TAB
Saw the SHOW THIS FOLDER AS AN EMAIL ADDRESS BOOK
BUT! it was grayed out and I could not check it.
Know what to do now?

What about the other steps? Is the Outlook Address Book Service installed in
your profile?

Then remove it. Restart Outlook. Add it back.
Unless you managed to corrupt your profile, you will be able to enable your
Contacts Folder as an electronic address book.
