a click on an e-mail hyperlink opens over 50 ie browser windows!

When clicking on an e-mail hyperlink in word (I believe it's word 2003), over
50 IE browser windows opens rather than opening a single e-mail window. This
only occurs with e-mail hyperlinks. Web hyperlinks opens a single IE browser
and links to the correct address.

It's not on my computer but on friend's computer that I sometimes work on
when there's a problem. I've never seen this type of problem before. I did
however see a similar mail from 2004 in an outlook discussion group in which
som 64 windows opened when clicking on an e-mail hyperlink - so it's not a
problem specific to my friend. Unfortunately, no one answered his mail. I'm
hoping that someone in this group can help us out. I don't really feel like
re-installing the program.
Her OS is Windows XP SP2 - she has updated all the updates possible from
Microsoft.
Word was pre-installed on her computer as part of the Microsoft Works
package that came with the computer.

Yes - I ran a virus scan - that was obviously one of the very first things I
did when I saw the problem. I updated Windows, Office and Norton Security.
Nothing helped.

I don't understand why this wouldn't be an office issue when this problem
has also been seen in Outlook - I googled the problem and found this very
same behavior, but that was back in 2004 and I was not able to contact the
person - the only difference was that his problem was in Outlooke and opened
over 60 windows and my friend's problem was in Word and opened over 50. In
both cases the problem was only related to the e-mail hyperlink. I work quite
a bit with computers and have never seen this behavior before. Since it's not
my computer, I don't really want to reinstall anything, but that may be the
solution.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hmm - I can also see this very same problem written by "ob" on 7/25/06 titled
"Email hyperlink opens dozens of IE windows." His problem showed up when
clicking on an e-mail hyperlink on a webpage . Exact same problem I'm seeing
when clicking on an e-mail hyperlink from Word. Sounds like a bug of some
sort. It wouldn't surprise me if there are others out there who have had the
same problem but have just not reported it or are not using this option. I
rather doubt it's very widespread or there would be many more reporting it,
but I can see it's something that has been experienced by different people.
Don't quite know where to go with this one or how to resolve it. Is it an
Office problem or a Windows problem?

It's most likely an Internet Explorer problem. Post your question in an
IE group and be sure to state the versions of Windows and IE that you're
using.
