What I don't understand about getting rid of Junk E-mail as it comes in with
'send & receive' is that ultimately it ends up in "Delete Email". Isn't
that just the same as deleting any other non-junk email, and shouldn't junk
email go to a place where it's recognized as junk, and after that blocked
from coming into my email again. I've been getting a lot of junk email, in
the junk email folder, and also a lot of it is showing up in my inbox. I've
got to run down the whole list because unvariably there's an email or two
that isn't junk and that I want to put in my address book. I have my spam
guard set at top protection "Exclusive" and still the stuff keeps pouring
in. I also have an obfuscated email address for newsgroups.

Thanks

You mention your spam guard setting. Is this a separate spam application or
a setting on your web mail? Personally, I only use the Entourage Junk Mail
Filter and I rarely get spam in my Inbox. I do keep a good Address Book for
mail I receive.

The normal behavior is for messages identified as junk to go to the Junk
Mail Folder. If the Junk Mail Filter does not identify it as junk it would
go to your Inbox.

If mail is moved other than the expected behavior it's a rule that's moving
the mail. There are 3 different kinds of rules. Disable all rules and
Mailing List Manager rules. Everything then should be going to your Inbox.
If you see other behavior let us know.

Mailing List Manager (MLM)
Junk Mail Filter
Rules (custom rules you create)

They run in the order listed above. The custom rules also run in the order
they are listed. (top runs first)

How the Junk Mail Filter works:

* The JMF never assigns messages from contacts in your Address Book to the
Junk category.
* Entourage 2004 automatically creates a Junk E-Mail folder and when
enabled will move the junk messages to this folder. (this means you need to
select the Junk Mail Filter under Tools in the menu bar to filter your mail.
Start with High or Low setting)

SpamGuard is the name for AT&T/Yahoo's spam filter. Rafael mentions the
"Exclusive" setting however which is a protection level of Entourage's
Junk Mail Filter.

SpamGuard has a few user options. It can be set to prevent mail labeled
as spam from being downloaded by a POP client, or you can have it modify
the subject line of junk mail messages when they are downloaded. You can
also turn it off.

If somebody like Rafael is getting a heavy volume of spam in Entourage,
I'd suggest setting SpamGuard not to download spam messages and
periodically checking the "Bulk" folder through the web interface for
wanted mail that was blocked. Keeping your online address book current
is important, because SpamGuard does generate a number of false
positives. Like in Entourage, addresses in the web mail address book
will not be labeled as spam. Having SpamGuard label messages is the
second and safer option, using an Entourage rule to keep the spam out of
the Inbox.
