Access Denied.

I have an NT4 server which I have set up a very simple
directory structure as follows.

Top level: "group data"
Second Level: "groupa" "groupb" "groupc" "groupd"

If a user has NTFS permissions of "read" to
folders "groupb" and "groupd", how can I make it so when
this particular user logs on to the nt4 server they only
see the following structure. With one drive mapped to
the "group data" top level(root) of the server.

Top level: "group data"
Second Level: "groupb" "groupd"

The domain users group has read access at the root of the
server but has no permissions at the second level
to "groupa" or "groupc", so why can they still see these
directories. They do get "access is denied" if they try
to open these directories they dont have access to. The
main thing I dont understand is why a user can "read" or
see a directory they dont have access to.
How can I make it so a user only "see's" or"reads" what
they have any access to?
