Access stops responding during Ins/Object/from File to OLE field

Access 2003 SP2: trying to generate a link to a .bmp file in a OLE field by
using the Insert/Object/Create from File menu options and browsing to the
..bmp file (2KB) with the Link Box checked. By pressing OK Access gets in a
not responding status. However Access is inserting a Bitmap Image when I use
the Create New option for the same Data Field (meaning that the field
definition is correct).
It drives me crazy. I had not experienced such basic taskproblems with
earlier versions of Access. Anyone out there has an idea how it can be
resolved?
