Adding programs to Office XP

D

Don Jennings

I have Office XP Pro installed on an XP-Home laptop. When the original
installation was done, Outlook was intentionally not installed. Since then,
the installed programs have been updated to SP3.

My wife is taking over the laptop now, and needs Outlook. I have the
original CDs, which include the apps and SP2. I'm assuming I can
"re-install" and add Outlook, but what effect will that have on the apps
that have already been brought to SP3? I guess I'm wondering which of the
following is possible/advisable:

1) install Outlook individually from CD, update Outlook to SP3;

2) uninstall Office completely, reinstall Office (with Outlook), update all
to SP3, perhaps with an update to SP2 in between;

3) other (specify ;-)

Thanks,
Don

This one. Updating Outlook may or may not be necessary.

Hi Don,

#3 - You can use the Microsoft Office XP Professional
listing in Add/Remove Programs in the Windows
Control Panel and set Outlook 2002(XP) to
'run from my computer' state. It will be
at the same Service Pack/update level as the
balance of the Office XP suite you have installed.

You shouldn't need to uninstall or to readd the
updates, but you may want to check http://officeupdates.com
before or after adding the Outlook feature.

Worked like a charm. As an added bonus, XP's "files and settings transfer
wizard" that we had run earlier to get her stuff from her old computer to
this one was smart enough to bring over her Outlook files and settings, even
though the app wasn't even installed at the time. I was prepared to figure
out how to get her Outlook stuff migrated after I installed it, but enjoyed
hearing her say "no, you're done, everything's already here." Thanks, Bob.
