Alternating side bar on even/odd pages

I'd like to have a side bar (scholar's margin, I've seen it called), that
will contain images and details corresponding to the text in the main
document. These should alternate from side-to-side with even/odd pages, and
the images should follow the text they're attached to.

Is this possible?

To get the alternating margin, enable the "Mirror margins" feature and set
the "outside" margin to a larger amount. Then see
http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/MarginalText.htm for a simple way to put
notes (or images) in the margins.
