Attachments won't open in Office 2007

I have Office2007 in Windows XP. When I attempt to open an email attachment,
I get the Office Configuration screen. If I kill that, the attachment content
shows up in Word, but if i attempt to highlight and copy it, it disappears.
What's going on, and how do I correct it? Thanks.

Don't try to open an attachment directly; instead, save it to your
hard drive and then open it.

Thanks Peter. But I must say, this is frustrating. We had Office 2000, and
when you clicked on a text attachment, it opened in Word. One click and done.
We "upgrade " to 2007 and now we have to Save first. Also, in Office 2007, we
keep getting messages that say, "This feature requires MSXML 5.0 to be
installed." And guess what -- MS support tells us that to use MSXML we must
install Office 2003. What good is Office 2007?
