Attempted a message recall but it was unsuccessful - help!

I really need to recall a message sent to a colleague as, having re-read it,
it seems more hostile than I intended so I fear she will take offence (though
none intended).
I've clicked my sent messages, opened the message, and chosen recall message
in the actions option. However, all I'm getting is that I attempted to
recall that message and not that I was successful in recalling that message.
I fear the worst.
To make matters worse, I decided to fiddle around by sending a test message
to my hotmail account from my work account to see if I could recall that one
instead. I followed the procedure for recalling, but still got the "attempted
to recall message" notification. When I then went into Hotmail messages to
see if the message was there, it was indeed there - but with a flag saying
that the sender attempted to recall this message. So my colleague will now
know that I attempted a recall, which blows my intended excuse that I sent it
in error. Someone please help me to troubleshoot this - I'm following MS
instructions but it's just not happening.

Recalls are unreliable in the best circumstances (when used between users on
the same Exchange server).
