auto-correct/replace of --

Office Word 2007 under WinXP

I've got the "replace -- with dash" checked in the proofing tools but it's
not doing it while I type.
Auto-format doesn't do it either.
(both auto-corrects work fine on straight->curly quotes)

I can do a manual find/replace but that's a bit annoying. I'm usually
working with somebody else's files so already have enough re-formatting to
do (paragraphs & styles & so on).

Is there something else I should check or do about it?
Thanks.

Be aware that replacement of hyphens (space-hyphen-space with en dash, two
hyphens with em dash) does not occur until you finish typing the word
following the hyphens. This has been known to throw me off. That affects
only AutoFormat As You Type. As for AutoFormat, I find that that fails when
the character before the hyphens is not a letter: if it's a parenthesis or a
number, you won't get the correction.

Thanks -- I'll see if that works, though it may be more trouble than
just...making the correction myself on files I've received. :)
