autorun a pps?

Mom came into town today for a visit. In hand she had a disk with what she
said was a PP show that a friend of hers had made of the pictures of the
time they spent in southern Alabama doing relief work for Hurricane Katrina.

I popped the disk in and it did not auto run , so I used windows explorer
and navigated to the files and found a .ppt file, that when clicked opened
PowerPoint in what I would call "edit" mode. ( I don't know PP) I could
click on something(view slideshow I think) and get the presentation to run).

I tried then to "save as" a .pps to my desktop, which it did. When I clicked
on that it seemed to run fine, then I created and autorun.inf file that
looked like this...

[autorun]
open=starterfile.exe katrina.pps
(google mentioned something about auto run only opened .exe or .com, hence
the starterfile.exe)
and burned it and the Katrina.pps file to disk.

Inserted the CD and nothing happened.
When I clicked on the katrina.pps file that was on the desktop it went to
the black "starting slideshow" screen and locked. task manager showed it as
'not responding"Tried again and got...
DDE Server Window: POWERPNT.EXE - No Disk
There is no disk in the drive. Please insert disk into drive E:

"Try again" gives me the same error, "Continue" and the slide show starts
though with no sound.
"cancel" Starts the slide show then it locks and I get (sometimes, others
it just locks up)
Powerpoint Slide Show- [katrina.pps]: Powerpnt.exe- No Disk

I wonder if what I created when I "saved as" was a shortcut to the original
and when it was out of the drive that create the non responsive report.

When I "save as" does it not include all the media files(pictures/music)
into that file?

Any clues on how to create an autoruning CD with a .pps?

I am using XP pro all updates with PP 2002 SP3.
I do not know which version of PP was used to create the original.
Thanks for any and all input

I've written a commercial program to solve this problem. There is even
a free license you can use that will do all you want to free.

Download AutoRun from: http://www.typhoonsoftware.com

Unlock AutoRun with the following:
Name free
Serial Number autorunfree.com

Start a new project, give the project a name and press Start wizard.
You can give your CD and name and title, select 'Open a File' from the
drop down box, then browse to your PPS file. and click Done.

You'll see your file added to the workspace, under Failsafe Program
(AutoRun will run this program - the installer to PowerPoint Viewer if
the user cannot view PPS files) select 'All Operating Systems' the
select the MS PowerPoint Viewer installer program. That's it.

Press the Create button to create your project files and the Test
button to try it out. You can play around with other settings like
background colors, images, music and more. When you are done modifying
your project press the Create button to update the project files. Then
burn the contents of your project folder (you can view this by clicking
on the button to the right of the Test button) to CD and you're done.

AutoRun will launch your PPS file from CD. If the user does not have
PowerPoint or the PowerPoint Viewer on their computer, AutoRun will
launch the PowerPoint Viewer installer, install the viewer and then
open your PPS file. All for free!

Thanks Phil !
Before I attempt to use your software, I wonder this...
Since the disk that I have has a .ppt file that opens in PP in what I call
"edit" mode, how do I create the .pps file from there that I will need to
use in your software? Simply "save as" with the .pps extension? Or is there
a Create slideshow type option in PP?
I am concerned about embedding all the media files in the .pps file
correctly.

Thanks again
