bookkeeping snag

Hello,
I've been using mac office excel for years, to record expenditures,
using dollar signs and decimel places in the worksheet cells.
Suddenly, in the last month, the entries for the current year as well
as past years have lost dollar signs and decimal places, though the
numbers are in tact.
If I go into one of the formatting programs, whether I click "number,'
"currency," "accounting," or "general," I get the same popup
command: "Enter a different value. Entry cannot be used. Try an
integer or decimal number."
I can't figure out how to correct this, or what has inadvertly
changed. Does anyone know what's going on, or what to do?
I just tried calling the phone number on the microsoft website and was
told support for this particular program ended in January.
Thanks,
Bobby

Hello Bobby,
I'm sure CyberTaz or others will find it out.

First thing I would like to ask you is whether you could accidently canged
the setting in your Mac OS sytem preferences in the intertnational settings.
Look there for languages and formats.

I would also like to makje this clear:
If I go into one of the formatting programs, whether I click "number,'
"currency," "accounting," or "general," I get the same popup
command: "Enter a different value. Entry cannot be used. Try an
integer or decimal number."
By this you mean you went to format>cell in Excel? If so, can you change the
format of cell in new/other spreadsheets than this particular one?

Which version of excell do you use?

I'm assuming you're using Office/Excel X, but is it fully updated?

How about OS X - update using the Combo updater from the Apple web site &
run Disk Utility - Repair Disk Permissions afterward.

These steps alone probably won't fix the issue but it will at least level
the field. As it stands now we have no idea what we're dealing with. Once
you tell us & confirm the current status of Office & OS X someone may be
able to help get things back on track:)

Cybertaz,
Just checked my worksheets, and I got everything back!
So thank you, thank you, thank you! Whatever you suggested that I
tried seems to have done the trick!

You're most welcome, although it just points out the importance of keeping
your software & OS up-to-date & repairing permissions - especially where OS
updates are involved.

Cypertaz,
I'm afraid I spoke too soon. Yes, I did get everything back on my
worksheets yesterday and was able to make some new entries. But now
it seems I've lost them again (not the numbers, just the $ and decimal
places; and the calculating tool won't function as it should again).
Going back to what you suggested trying, I do believe all my software
is up-to-date. Less certain about my OS and repairing permissions-
how do I know I have applied this program as you suggest?
Bobby
