Break Links command

Version: 2004 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) Processor: Power PC I have several workbooks, most of which have internal links between worksheets. Suddenly the "Break Links" option from the "Edit" command is not active in ANY of my workbooks, including those with many links. Even if I open a new workbook and creat a link between two worksheets, the "Break Links" tab is inactive.

I've repaired permissions and ran Disk Warrior. Didn't help.

Any help would be appreciated for I really need this function.

Thank you.

I'm assuming that what you're referring to is the Break Link button in the
Edit> Links... Dialog. If so, that only pertains to links between Workbook
files & has nothing to do with formula (internal) links within the same
Workbook or Hyperlinks.

If you want break formula links select & copy the cells involved, leave them
selected then go to Edit> Paste Special. Select either "Values" or "Values &
number formats", click OK.

If they're Hyperlinks Control/Right-Click the cell, choose Hyperlink, then
click the Remove Link button.

Thanks for the prompt reply. I appreciate your help. But........

You write that "the Break Link button ... only pertains to links between Workbook files & has nothing to do with formula (internal) links
within the same Workbook." That's odd because I've been using "Break Link" button to break links between worksheets in the same workbook for years. Exactly what is seen as impossible in your reply.

So I'm really puzzled. Not only has a needed, necessary and often used function disappeared, but it shouldn't been there in the first place!!

Well, perhaps it would help if you'd clarify what you're referring to as a
'link' & how you're creating them. I don't mean to tell you that you don't
remember what you believe you remember -- I hate when people tell me "That
can't happen." :)

By definition there are no "links" within a workbook even though the term is
used to describe a formula reference (i.e., a cell on Sheet1 containing
=Sheet3!B27) to some other location in the file. Even the "Paste Link"
button in the Paste Special dialog merely creates such a formula reference
to the copied cells.

A link OTOH is a "connection" to a source external to the destination file
where the data is to be displayed. The cell would contain something more
like =[SomeOtherFileName.xls]Sheet1!A1

Maybe I'm not understanding what you're looking for, but AFAIK there has
never been a "Break Links" command in the Edit menu itself -- Mac or Windows
versions -- although I do vaguely recall that it may have been in a
"Links..." submenu once upon a time. But even if it were it had no effect on
formula references within the file.
