Can anyone explain how to expand a Group programmatically?

In a DAP. I can expand a record that is expandable programmatically, it's
just that I can't make the data viewable unless I expand the record
manually. When I do it programmatically the subgroup controls appear but not
the data. Can this be done? Thanks.
