Can I make a text box transparent? Word 2000

I am used to Publisher and all I have to work with is Word... Can I make a
text box transparent so that the background is visible along with the text?
I am making a business card with a background picture and I want the text to
have no white space around it like a box. Is this possible any way in Word?
