"Cannot open Outlook", but only with Exchange

Similar to other 'cannot open' issues, insofar as the error message. Details:

Outlook 2007 (on Vista Ultimate x64); I've already deleted/recreated
profiles, mailboxes, tried the navpane reset fix, all to no avail. Trying to
connect to an Exchange Server (2003).

Launching Outlook causes the error box to appear with: "Cannot start
Microsoft Office Outlook. Cannot open the Outlook window. The set of folders
cannot be opened. the information store could not be opened." Outlook then
closes.

Looking in the Mail control panel (Control Panel > View 32-bit Control
Panels), the only truly odd-looking item is under the Data Files tab, where
the Mailbox filename is listed as "Not available". When adding the Exchange
account to Outlook (which works normally previous to adding the Exchange
acct), Outlook recognizes the server and my user name.

I have deleted all old profiles and reentered everything twice now, with no
noticeable effect.

What's mystifying me is when I created a new user on this machine and set up
the same account on Exchange, it works perfectly. However, because of various
settings and VPNs and such I have configured on the main profile, switching
between users (or abandoning the original profile entirely) is not an option.

Thoughts would be appreciated. TIA.

Hi, Cris:

I did previously, and did again just now. The only appreciable difference is
the message in the error box, which has changed to, "Cannot open your default
e-mail folders. The information store could not be opened."
