Cannot Save in Project 2007

I have Project Professional 2007 installed on lab computers for student use.

I had a problem today where none of my lab computers were able to save
within Project. It didn't matter if it was a newly created file with one
entry in it, or a file from a professor that the students needed to work on.
The Save & Save As options were greyed out in the File menu. There was no
Error message or any indication as to what was causing the problem.

I logged in as an Admin user and ran into the same problem.

5 Minutes later everyone was able to save again. I was still searching for
an answer when it started working again. I didn't get a chance to perform any
troubleshooting.

Any ideas what happened?

We are in week 7 of our 10 week term and this is the first problem I have
had with Project.

If it matters the Project install/Key is a Volume License key obtained
through the MSDN Academic Alliance program.

I did not activate the copies on every one of the lab computers (250+
workstations)
The software was installed on an image, this image was then sysprepped and
deployed.

The student reported activating the product when he first started it up. And
had no problems with it. This fits in with my testing where any user on the
computer can activate the software when necessary. And after activation the
software works without any problems.

Do you think the activation process failed but did not report any errors?

Your activation idea got me thinking.

If our VL code was activated on a different model computer would that make
the other activations invalid? (in our labs we have at least 5 different CPU
configs)
If this is the case I will have to reconsider our installation methodology.
Unless there is a good work-around.

Chris,

I would suspect that buying this many licenses you could get advice from
Microsoft or the reseller on how to activate in bulk?

Rob,

It's one key that is installed on all of the computers. And I purchased
directly from MS (MSDN AA subscriptions are all through MS directly)

I have a ticket in with MS support.

I'll post my findings here for others to see.
