Can't find mso97.dll

Mike

I am running windows XP with Office XP Profesional. I
installed Project 4.0 and then used my 98 upgrade disc.
The install crashed at the end, can't remembered the
message. The problem is when I rebooted, and logged in I
recevied an error message that OSA.EXE cannot find
MSO97.DLL.

I searched support for MSO97.DLL and came up with find it
and rename it, it will replace its self. Didn't work. Then
one solution for Office 97 sad to copy it from the Office
CD back to the directory. Office XP doesn't have this file.

Can anyone PLEASE help me. The only thing I can think of
is to disable OSA.EXE in msconfig.

Thanks,
Mike

164921 - Wasn't a network Install and the files were in
their proper directory.

""To work around this problem, use either of the following
two methods. Method 1: Copy Ms*.dll Files to the Folder
Indicated in the Registry.""

178693 - Not this either. I don't get errors starting
applications. Project 98 came up with an error message
saying that the installation was not complete. I rebooted
and that is when I got the mso97.dll error when osa.exe
was starting. The other app's open without any errors. I
tried re-running the install and the same message came up.
I never got to trying to run Project 98.

""When you start Microsoft Project 98, when the splash
screen appears, you may receive the following error:
WINPROJ caused an invalid page fault in module WINPROJ.EXE
at <address>.

Windows NT
The instruction at "0x30159f19" referenced memory
at "<address>". The memory could not be read.
CAUSE This behavior occurs when the Microsoft Office
international dll, Mso7enu.dll, is not located where
Mso97.dll can find it. Or, you have the wrong version of
Mso7enu.dll. NOTE: This behavior may also be caused by the
Windows List Seperator in Regional Settings being set to
null or blank. Normally it is set to a comma. If the
workaround in this article does not resolve your problem,
verify the List Separator in the Windows Regional
Settings.

NOTE: If this workaround does not resolve this behavior,
see the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: 179794
Project Stops Responding After Startup Splash Screen.""

The above (179794) was no help either. I wonder if Project
98 over wrote mso97.dll? I could not find this file on the
Office XP disc to check the date.

Thanks for your help. If you have any other ideas please
let me know,

Mike

I seem to recall that one problem was that when you install Project 97, it
installs the wrong version of mso97.dll AND other too-early files as well,
as wells a registry entries telling osa.exe, among others, to use the wrong
version of mso*.dll. As far as I can tell, Office XP uses mso.dll, rather
than mso97.dll.

Have you tried running either Repair Office from the Add/Remove setup menu
or Detect and Repair from any application's Help menu? Start - Settings -
Add or Remove Programs - MS Office XP... - Change - Repair. (Or, Help -
Detect and Repair from any Office XP application's menu)

Hi Herb,
Yes, I did put the office XP CD in and I run Repair Office
from the set menu. This was one of the early things I
tried.

I wonder if Project 98 could of changed the registry and
it should be looking for the mso.dll. Maybe I'll try
looking for a mso.dll. If I do I could edit the line in
the registry and tell it to look at that file. But, as I
am logging in, the pop up window does say the OSA.EXE is
looking for mso97.DLL. Unless that registry entry is used
for the file name in that pop up window. Maybe I'll
install Office XP on another computer and see what that
same registry entry contains and compair them between the
two PC's.

Thanks,
Mike
