Can't open a forwarded email attachment

I can't open an attachment if it is an email that has been forwarded. I can
open excel spreadsheets, word docs, etc. I am using Exchange. I'm using
Outlook 2007. Didn't have this problem on Outlook 2003 (new machine as
well). Can open with OWA. Error message is "This file cannot be previewed
because of an error with the following previewer: Microsoft Office Outlook
message and item previewer. To open this file in its own program,
double-click it." Its own program is Outlook. Have tried repairing office.
Any suggestions?

Unless the attached file is a filetype of .pst then, no, it's own
program is NOT Outlook. Outlook doesn't open any attachments. It
cannot display JPEGs, AVIs, MOVs, bitmaps, etc. You need an
application installed that is associated with the filetype to view its
contents.

Save the attachment to your hard disk and then double-click on it to
use whatever program is associated to display that filetype.

Thank you for your reply. I apparently didn't make myself clear. It is not
a file that I am trying to open. Those ALL open correctly using their
originating application. If I want to forward an email, I have two options -
forward and forward as an attachment. If I receive an email that someone has
forwarded to me as an attachment, I cannot open the forwarded part. I can
open the first layer which shows up in my inbox; but, when I click on the
part that says FW: subject abc with an envelope beside it, out from the word
Attachments, I get the error I listed previously. Anymore thoughts that
might help? Let me also note that I can forward the email to someone else
and they can open all layers even though I could not open it.

Is the attachment of filetype .msg?

As an experiment, drag a mail item from Outlook to your desktop. That
should create a copy which is an .msg file. Then double-click on the
..eml file to see if it opens in its own window.

If it is filetype .eml, Outlook Express normally handles that one.

You can check which filetypes are assigned to what apps by looking in
Windows Explorer under Tools -> Options -> Filetypes. Check on the
EML and MSG filetypes to see if they are associated with an app and to
which one. From a DOS shell, you can also run "assoc .msg" and "assoc
..eml" to see if there is an association defined for these filetypes
(the association will be to a filetype by name which then you can look
in the registry to lookup).

I am having the exact same problem, and it just started yesterday,
same as the OP. I've been using 2007 since the beginning of the year
with no problem.

When I do a save as to the desktop, Outlook wants to save the
forwarded message as a .msg file.

I can open the exact same email in Outlook Express just fine (and
Outlook Express sees it as an .eml file)

I am wondering if there has been some update that might have changed
something.

Meanwhile, I can open any attachment OTHER than a forwarded message
just fine.

I cannot open any forwarded message in Outlook 2007 anymore.

Ok, browsing through this group, I see that there are a bunch of
people having this problem in the past week. *Something* must have
changed, maybe as part of a Windows Update.

I too have a machine with this problem. Just started yesterday. So far
can not find any help online. User is getting upset that it is not
working.

I was having this problem. Just found this online.

Turns out my user was having problems with Google Desktop Search
yesterday, so he uninstalled the version we install and went and
downloaded the latest version. Removed the version he installed and
suddenly the Outlook problem went away. Reverted him to the approved
version of GDS and that problem went away too.

Hope this helps.
