Can't publish to my host

R

rosweed

I cannot publish my pages to my hosting company. This all began when I
switched computers a couple of months ago. I got (and continue to) get this
error message: Unable to open http://www.rosweed.com. Possible causes: 1. The
web server may not have the FrontPage Server extensions enabled. 2 The web
server may be temporarily out of service. 3. If you are connecting through a
proxy server, the proxy settings may be incorrect. 4. An error may have
occurred in the web server.

After many hours on the phone with my host tech support, the following has
been done:
-Office 2003 was re-installed
-FrontPage 2002 was re-installed
-FrontPage 2003 update was re-installed
-extensions are installed and working properly
-htaccess files have been removed from host server
-Verizon says they don't use a proxy server
-XP firewalls are disabled

One techie told me to just publish using ftp, which I did. It worked, but
was extremely slow and I wanted to do it the old way. The next techie told me
I shouldn't have used ftp and anything I published would have to be
re-published using FrontPage. About this time my index (home) page
disappeared. My host doesn't know where it is or why it disappeared, but the
site won't publish at all unless the server contains an index page which I
can't upload. My host says everything seems to be fine on their end. I'm
stuck. Can anyone help me?

Thanks,

rosweed

I can't seem to access the site live online. I get this error message: The
folder 'http://www.rosweed.com/' isn't accessible. The folder may be located
in an unavailable location, protected with a password, or the filename
contains a / or \.

No you shouldn't have used third party ftp, cause that will break the extensions (usually).

You should talk to your host again, because currently all you have is a browsable root directory, at least have them throw up an index page for now. There's nothing there now,,mostly just empty folders.

Also find out from them what your index page should be...index.html or index.htm.

Then outline here how you have been attempting to Publish to your web, so others can help ya.

Rob and CT,

It looks like all my files have pretty well disappeared. I have no idea why.
I will contact my host and try to figure this out. But it looks to me that
I'm probably going to have to re-load everything. I just wish I could
understand why this happened do I can avoid whatever it was in the future.

After waiting for my host to finally delete all my files (the few that were
left after they mysteriously disappeared) and create a blank index page, I
still can't publish to my host server. Any ideas?

After deleting all your files did they reapply / repair the FP SE?
- the way to check is to see if you can open your online site using
File Open Site/Web and entering your URL as http://www.yoursitenamehere.com/ and logging in

Yes, I can log into the site. For some reason I cannot publish from my
machine to their server. They say everything looks fine on their end. I have
deleted and reinstalled FP and that didn't work. I just can't understand why
this won't work.

Deleting / reinstalling the client software usually does not solve publishing problems
- what error messages do you get when you try to publish
If you have FP 2003 you can reverse publish (remote is your PC) at the logged in online site (local)

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but what will this do for me?

Itried adding the slash at the end, but that didn't work, either. I get the
same message.

Can you explain how to reverse publish?

Thanks!

Open your online site in FP
- that will be your "Local"
Select Remote web site View and then Remote Web Site Properties
If your PC is a disc based web (C:\something\...) select File System and browse to the Web folder on your PC, & OK (you may want to
also select the Publishing tab and set it to All pages)
- that will be your "Remote"

Then back in Remote Web Site View (bottom right) select Remote to Local & Publish Web Site

| Itried adding the slash at the end, but that didn't work, either. I get the
| same message.
|
| Can you explain how to reverse publish?
|
| Thanks!

Since I switched computers, I have never been able to publish by selecting
FrontPage or Sharepoint Services and entering http://www.rosweed.com in
Remote Web Site Properties. All I get is the error message mentioned
previously. I don't even get to the password step.

I can publish by selecting FTP.

Thanks,
Shawn

If you have publish via FTP, the host will need to re-install the extensions for your account before
you can publish. Can you open the site directly in FP on the live/remote server?

Since I switched computers, I have never been able to publish by selecting
FrontPage or Sharepoint Services and entering http://www.rosweed.com in
Remote Web Site Properties. All I get is the error message mentioned
previously. I don't even get to the password step.

I can publish by selecting FTP.

I don't think so, but perhaps I've been doing it wrong. When I go to
File/Open Site it doesn't give me any way to open my site on the internet. It
just gives me a list of my various files on my computer.

If I try File/Open it gives me the same options.

Do I understand your question?

Thanks,
Shawn

I don't think so, but perhaps I've been doing it wrong. When I go to
File/Open Site it doesn't give me any way to open my site on the internet. It
just gives me a list of my various files on my computer.

If I try File/Open it gives me the same options.

Do I understand your question?

Thanks,
Shawn

If you have publish via FTP, the host will need to re-install the extensions for your account
before
you can publish.

Thanks,
Shawn

You said in the start of this thread you did that w/o any problem in FP by using
File Open Site/Web and entering your URL as http://www.yoursitenamehere.com/ and logging in

| Please explain "open your online site in FP". I'm not sure how to do that.
