Can't send email becuase Proper authentication required

I can receive mail but cannot send some messages. I receive the following
errror

550 5.7.1 <[email protected]>... Relaying denied. Proper
authentication required.

This has proved true for all mail.house.gov addresses, pentagon addresses,
adresses to universities that are not duke (where I attend school). Hotmail,
yahoo, ect work. Also I can send email to those who do not work if if I
manage my email directly from the Internet, so its Outlook that is the
problem.

I went into tools, email accounts, more properti esand clicked on the
authentication required for outgoing mail. (I tried it with using same info
as incoming mail, typing it in separatly, and logging in using secure
authentication) It didn't do anything. I tried making the outgoing smtp
server secure- this made it impossible to send any mail- and all sorts of
other combinations of stuff.

There was nothing in any help, either in Outlook or on this web page that
was even remotely helpful. Please help. THis is beyond frustrating.

Are you on Duke's network while trying to use their SMTP server? That's
usually the cause of the 'relaying' error (being off the network of the SMTP
server being used).

Did you check with the administrator of the email server to find out what
you need to configure to allow it to work?

I'm not sure. I don't have any duke pages up if thats what you mean. I live
pretty far from campus so I might be off the network - - I have to use a VPN
client to gain access to library and other restricted resources.

From the header of your post it looks like you're on RoadRunner cable
broadband. Are you using their SMTP server for sending mail? Most likely you
should using theirs.

So what should I do?

I have cable at home and outlook is set up so that my outgoing mail server
is smtp.duke.edu (which is how duke's online support directions say to set up
outlook)

I used their directions to configure outlook. I put in a request for
additional help but have not heard back yet.

When you're at home you may need to change it to RoadRunner's or check with
Duke's IT people if there's a way to access their SMTP server while
off-campus

Change that value to use Road Runner's SMTP server and your Road Runner
username/password.

Thanks. I think that worked- - I didn't get the error at least. Does this
mean when I'm using Duke's wireless network- or anyone's but my home's that
I'll have to change the outgoing server to whatever wireless network I"m
connected to. ( for the most part it will be either mine at home or Duke's)

Yes, you'll have to change the SMTP server based on the network you're
sitting on. I wrote a little program that does it for me since I use either
my home broadband or a dialup provider when I'm at work.
