Can't sort by date

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel The date column (which is correctly formatted as 04/24/2009 contains stuff from 2009 and 2010.
When I attempt to sort by date, if I use "ascending" the first date shown is January 2010. It should be April 2009. If I choose "descending" I get 12/31/2009 on top. The "lowest" or earliest date is 04/04/2009, but it isn't getting recognized as what it is.

Probably because some of the dates are text, not an actual date value.

Yes, I figured it later. Just 'cause I formatted the column as dates, doesn't mean that the text (which appeared to be dates) was in fact dates. I changed them by doing a replace all / to - That made Excel know what they were.
