Changes saved in one Word 2003 doc made changes in other Word docs

I had a user today who needed 25 different documents that were all variations
of an original doc. She opened the original and did 25 "Save As" giving each
a different name. She then proceded to work on one at a time to make her
changes. When she got done she went to print them all but discovered that all
were identical to the last doc she edited. She had only worked on on document
at a time. I opened Word and made a change to one of the docs and it did
change all the documents that were created for the original. We "fixed" the
problem by making multiple copies and renamed them without opening Word but
she had to re-do a lot of typing. Does anyone have an idea what was going on?
Could it be related to all the docs having the same first (13) characters in
their name and confusing the temp file Word uses when a doc is open?
