Changing Working Times

I am trying to change the working hours on a project, I have sarted wit
a 24 hr calender as this project we will be working around the clock fo
4 weeks.I would like to step up the working day showing the meal break
but I can only set up 5 periods.

Week 1 (single shift)
Start time 7:00am
1st meal break 10:30 to 11:00am
2nd meal break 2:30 to 3:00pm
Finish time 6:00pm

I have set this up to show these times but the 2nd week I run out o
time segments.

Week 2 (double shift)
1st shift
Start time 4:00am
1st meal break 7:30 to 8:00am
2nd meal break 11:30am to 12:00pm
Finish time 4:00pm
2nd shift
Start time 4:00pm
1st meal break 7:30 to 8:00pm
2nd meal break 11:30pm to 12:00am
Finish time 4:00am

Week 3 (double shift with a 4 hr NDT period)
1st shift
Start time 4:00am1
st meal break 7:00 to 7:300am
2nd meal break 10:30 to 11:00am
Finish time 2:00pm
2nd shift
Start time 2:00pm
1st meal break 5:00 to 5:30pm
2nd meal break 8:30pm to 9:00pm
Finish time 12:00am
12:00 to 4:00am NDT window.

Week 4 will be the same as week 2Will I be doing the correct thing if
incorporated the change over of shifts as 1 time period this would allo
the work time / breaks to fit into the 5 time period segments? Thanks fo
your help.Joh

Hello SloopJohnB,

I am guessing that you have different resources working the various
shifts.

As a suggestion, I would keep the 24 hours calendar and then define
the two shift calendars (1st and 2nd) and assign the shift calendars
to the resources. Project will then schedule the work according to
the resources' calendars.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Thanks Julie

I followed my question and used the 24 hr calender, and changed th
work hours as exceptions:
Start 1st shift
1st meal break (1st shift)
2nd meal break (1nd Shift)
1st meal break (2nd shift)
2nd meal break (2nd shifr)
Finish 2nd shift

I just change the days of the calander to suit the different wor
times. 1 x 11hr, 2 x 12 hr and 2 x 10 shifts

By making it just one single work day it appears to be working fine.

When I get some more time (when) I will look at trying the shif
calanders.

If I use the shift calander (2 shifts) will the resources show up fo
each shift

You're welcome and thanks for the feedback. I don't follow what
you've done below, but if it works for you -- superb!

If you want to keep track of how many workers (first shift, second
shift etc) you need, I suggest taking a look -- when you get time --
at resources and the shift calendars.

Feel free to post back if you have further questions.

Note that using the 24 hour calendar implies that each individual resource
works 24/7 never getting any breaks or down-time. Machines may work like
that but people don't. Could you start a task on Monday morning and work
continuously on it without even a nap or a meal for several days or a week
or more? Probably not. But using the 24 hour calendar says that is exactly
what is going to happen. IMHO, the project calendar should be the work
schedule of the most typical resource. If your firm works 24 hours a day,
you need to set up separate calendars for day shift, swing shift, and
graveyard for tasks to be scheduled the way they'll go in the real world.
Pick the one that is describes the work schedule for the typical resource to
use as your project calendar.
