Compacting not reducing the size of my pst file.

I have deleted many emails, including many large emails (and emptied my
deleted mail folder). Yet, when I compact my data file it says "compacting"
for just a moment and then completes. However the size of my pst file is not
reduced.

Compacting only works if a really substantial amount of data is deleted
from the PST file. I don't know what the amount or percentage is, but it
must be quite a good size. Compacting a PST file just to gain a few KB
or even MB is probably not worth to go through the process.

I have recently begun to have a similar problem. I've never had trouble
before. Looking at the folder size information, my pst file shouldn't be more
than 50MB, but the file is clocking in at over 195MB. Compacting has always
reduced the file to 5 of 10% of the folder size, but I too get a brief
"compacting…" message and then nothing.

The problem has been fixed. It appears that my PST file was corrupted. There
is a utility in the Office folder called Scanpst.exe that fixed it right up,
and now it compacts just fine. Just double-click on the exe. file and tell it
which file to scan.
