connect a shape to named terminals

I have a number of shapes that represent terminal strips but every now
and then I need to connect a jumper be it a wire, capacitor, or diode.
The drawings are built using VBA and an Access database.
Presently the drawings are built in a batch and ones that need a jumper
are flaged and I add the jumper manually. I thnk the jumpers can have
their leads named cathode -- anode. The database holds the terminal
strip information including weither or not it has a jumper and it's
polarity. I have started to built this functionally a number of times
but really can't seem a method that doesn't lead to a dead end. The
big problem is the jumper, I need a "diode" with smart leads. Are
there examples that I can use to do this and where are they?
