Entourage cannot receive or send mail when connected outside of my
office, to a different internet provider.

Have a look at the following instructions. Although they are titled
"from Home", they are essentially for anyone outside his office.

"Connecting Entourage to an Exchange Server from Home"

If something doesn't work for you then please post back with any error
messages.

Hope this helps!

Actually, paulafc, you'll likely find that it works sporadically...

I've been operating Entourage in this manner for about three months now. I
operate it from outside the corporate network, while on VPN into to the
network, and over a physical connection to the network.

However, in all modes, operation is sporadic and unpredictable. Each time I
open Entourage, the connection to the Exchange server appears to be achieved
(that is, the "Not Connected" indicator next to the mailbox name
disappears). Yet sometimes (random) Entourage is not able to interact with
the Exchange server - no mail downloads, calendar updates, can't send mail.
Manual "Send/Receive" does not initiate the connection, the "Schedule 'Send
and Receive All' timer simply resets without any indication of connection.

I can change addresses in the Exchange Server Address window in the "Edit
Account" box (we have multiple paths into our Exchange server) and that
sometimes initiates an Exchange connection. Or I can shut and reopen
Entourage multiple times until a connection starts. The connection will
stay active for a while (hours, minutes; again, random) and, while active,
be fully functional.

From reading on various Exchange support websites, there appears to be a
minor but important difference in how Outlook and Entourage (or maybe it's
Windows and Mac...) communicate with an Exchange server. My relatively
unsupported suspicion is that this is the root cause of an unstable
connection between Entourage and an Exchange server.

I'd be extremely grateful for insight from one of this group's monitors on
this topic.

Thanks,

I very much agree with jbrewer. After being in IT for almost 20 years I find the process of establishing a connection to be sporatic and cumbersome.

Can anyone shed any light?

BTW, I have this problem on the corporate network and outside the network.
