Create a detailed status report for non MS Project users

I am a 2003 MSP Professional user. Our agency uses projects for basic linked
timelines only. We would like to be able to create a status report for a
multi-phased project detailed timeline. Is there a way to make a status
report from a detailed timeline so that we are not managing the project with
2 documents...MSProject timeline and MS Word status report chart?

Does a MS Project status report allow you to enter notes in the status report?
Is it exportable in word or excel for non MSP users?
Can you recommend the best book for the moderately experienced user?

Hi Donna,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

Are you using a stand-alone PC or using Professional with a server? If the
latter, try posting on the server newsgroup. Please see FAQ Item: 24.

Donna,
In addition to Mike's comments, it would be helpful to know what type of
status reports you need. For example, are you using one of the built-in
reports or did you create your own report format? Do you need the Gantt
graphic or just the table data?

Project does have a Notes field but displaying it in a standard Project
view is not very flexible. A few years ago I wrote a VBA macro that
exports project fields to Excel, including the Notes field. This is very
useful for two reasons. First, the full text of the Notes field is
shown. Second, users who do not have Project can view the exported data
(assuming they do have Excel). If you are interested in the macro, write
me direct at the address below.

Donna if you create a customised view (incl table, filter, group etc)
then give this out to PMs along with instructions on how to use
organiser then you should get a consistent report in MS Project for
each schedule with the requried information. Notes field is ideal for
comments. The keep it simple approach would then be to screen capture
that and embed within Word status report and add the rest of the
detail.
