Creating a Hotmail account with Entourage

D

David Bunker

With a paying MSN/hotmail account, which has worked with Entourage 2004
Mac for years, I started to get a HTTP error: Access to the resource
is forbidden. Explanation: The Windows Live Hotmail folder could not
be received. Upgraded to Entourage 2008 Mac with same problem. 18597
Error. I deleted the MSN account and recreated the account using the
assistant, told set up was successful, but when verifying the
smtp.live.com outgoing shows an error in red.

Hi David,

Hotmail accounts can no longer be accessed via HTTP. This has nothing to do
with Entourage, but it is a server-based change imposed by Microsoft. See
here for instructions on how to configure Entourage to access your Hotmail
account via POP3:

Michael,

If you pop over to the Windows Live forum, you'll notice that users of Entourage for Mac are having big problems with the server-change you mentioned. This has been a bit of a frustrating issue to resolve - users like myself have followed the instructions to re-enable use of their Hotmail accounts in Entourage (using POP) and have been able to receive email, but not send email, which I *think* might be what David is trying to tell you here.

You have asked David to go elsewhere for help, because this issue has "nothing to do with Entourage," but if you look here

<https://windowslivehelp.com/community/t/102827.aspx>

you'll see that users who try to resolve this problem at the Windows Live site are being told that this "appears to be an Entourage issue," and that we should contact you guys.

I'm sure you'll see that this is a rather discouraging development as it appears that paying customers are unable to resolve a major problem with their email service no matter which way they turn.

If, as an MVP, you have the ability to contact someone at Microsoft who could perhaps bridge between the Windows Live and the Entourage staffs so that we can get this problem resolved, that would be amazing!

Thanks,

Nathan

Hi Nathan,

we'll wait for David to post back so we can see if this is indeed the same
issue; if this is indeed the case, I do not mind passing on information to
the Macintosh Business Unit at Microsoft. Keep in mind, though, that the
Windows Live Mail ought to have contacts there, too, so perhaps you could
encourage them to get in touch with MacBU as well?

I have had no problem with my Windows Live (formerly Hotmail) account in
Entourage, but then again, I use it very infrequently.

Most of the issues I'm seeing reported have to do with getting the correct
SMTP port settings. They can differ with each ISP. One user that was having
problems found out their work blocked outside ports.

Entourage can't auto discover what these ports and security settings should
be. You have to get that info from your ISP.

Are you aware you have to change to a POP account?

I am stuck with the same situation - can receive mail (sort of) but no
longer can send mail. I took it to an apple store last night and they
went through all the new set up that I did to create the pop account
and it just gives me the same error message. This is very
frustrating. I have used this account for 10 years and now I am not
able to work properly. Besides this, the original inbox and folders I
created are not accessible at all. I would have to copy everything
(1000s of emails) and move them over to the new inbox and folders if I
get that working. What is the problem here? This is really a pain
and not what I expect from Microsoft and their products. Is there
going to be real help?

thank you to anyone who can really be bothered with sorting this out
with me.

If you read the article I referenced and the comments made by users you
should find a solution. The info needed for SMTP will come from YOUR ISP. No
one but you can get this info.

I spent two hours on the holiday weekend at the Geek Squad (after
spending 90 minutes with the guys at the Genius Bar at Apple) with
your 'noted' solution - never getting through. There is a port
problem. When I select the port it does not stay. This is a software
problem. I don't know what this has to do with my ISP. I will call
Verizon and ask if they have any idea how to help with my STMP.

It shouldn't be this difficult!
