Creating letterhead

I am trying to create a template with an already set letterhead. I¹ve
scanned the document (.pdf) then turned it into .doc, and then to .dotx. But
the scanned and converted document does not allow me to enter text. I just
want the top part of the letterhead in the template so I can ³Save As² each
time I wish to either write on the document or cut and paste into it.
Suggestions?

Many thanks.

Hi Charles;

I'm not sure what you mean by "turned it into .doc, and then to .dotx" but
you can't simply turn a PDF file into a Word document or a template. What
you have right now is a document (or template) which has a graphic object in
it, as as you've found you can't type on the object.

What you can do is Insert the PDF into a document Header in order to use it
as a part of the letterhead template you save. It might be a good idea to
crop the PDF to be no larger than it has to be. Although the article is
predominantly based on Word for Windows the process is essentially the same
in the Mac version so have a look here:

Bob--Thank you. So far I've placed the reduced file into the header, but I'm
having problems manipulating it--adjusting the size appropriately--though I
can live with what I have. However, I want this letterhead to appear on the
first page only, and going to Format-->Document doesn't give me this option.
First Page Different will just put the header into everything but the first
page. There should be an obvious workaround but I can't seem to find it.

Hi Charles;

Look more closely at the page I referred you to... There are instructions
there for creating a "2 Page Letterhead". That's what you're looking for :)

I'm unclear as to why you're having trouble resizing. Can you be more
specific as to what you're doing & why it isn't working?

One request if you please ‹ it's easiest for everyone to follow the thread
if you reply in the established top/bottom posting manner. There are 2
schools of thought as to which is the "right" way & which anyone chooses for
an initial response is up to them ‹ I won't argue the merits of either :)
But if a pattern is established it's better to follow that pattern rather
than jumping from top to bottom & back again regardless of personal
preference.

Bob--I should have read your email more carefully, sorry about that. The
solution presented is fairly easy, after all.

Resizing: I scanned the selected image using Adobe Acrobat Professional, but
as I could copy it as such, I saved it as a .jpeg, opened it in Preview,
selected the image and pasted into my header. When I click on the header
image and the box appears around it, dragging left and/or right does resize
but it distorts the image (I have the aspect ratio on). I don't work with
graphics very often, so there's probably something quite simple I'm missing.

Thank you, too, for indicating the best way to reply to a post for
consistency and ease of reading.

Ok, Charles, I believe I see where the problem is occurring... According to
your first message it sounds like the PDF includes more content & covers
more area than you actually need or want. When you select the image use the
Crop tool in the Formatting Palette to reduce the Height and/or Width of the
"frame" containing the PDF. You can use any of the "handles" on the 4 sides
& 4 corners of that bounding box to reduce the size of the box without
reducing the size of what's in it. It's kinda like trimming away the edges.

After cropping the image turn the Crop tool off, then use the *corner*
handles of the bounding box to scale the image to the H/W dimensions you
want. By using the corner handles the H/W will scale proportionately as long
as Lock Aspect Ratio is checked. Alternatively, that check enables you to
enter either a height value or a width value & the other will change
proportionately. You can also dbl-click the object to get into the Format
Picture dialog where you can change the dimensions or scale by percentage.

Thank you, Bob. I've played a bit, but I need to do more to get the
proportions just right.

I appreciate the quick feedback.

Best,

Charles
