Hi Anya Blue,
from program management textbooks you get the information that a
project’s critical path is the combination of activities that, if any
are delayed, will delay the project’s finish. The primary objectiveof
it is to determine the project’s finish date and to determine the
extent to which an activity can be delayed without delaying the
project. Delays on the critical path will delay completion of the
entire project. The tasks or activities on a critical path have zero
slack. Critical path is the longest path through the activity network
that allows for the completion of all project related activities. It
allows you to actively monitor and control the timescale of the
project. Frequently, a Critical Path is not visible in the project
plan. This can arise from entering fixed dates for milestones. Enter
the dates using an extra column to overcome this problem (see ‎Tip
38).

To display critical tasks, choose “Format a Gantt Chart Wizard†from
the menu, select Critical Path, and click Next. In the next step
choose Dates, and click Next. Keep clicking Next in the remaining
steps, until you get to click on Format It. Click Exit to close the
Wizard.

The question is: Do you always see the critical path in forward
planning (i.e. planning to the given project end ahead) only? - Do you
always see the critical path in backward planning (i.e. planning from
the given project start) only? - Or is forward/backward planning
irrelevant to see the critical path?

Cheers, Michael

Another way to view critical path is to go to View -> More Views -> Detail
Gantt and Apply.
